Ask ABC: The filing deadlines and release dates for the periodical FAS-FAX report have changed. Why? Earlier this year, a major national newsstand magazine wholesaler and distributorAnderson Newsceased operations, leaving many magazine publishers with incomplete draw and return information. While the effect of Anderson’s closure varies from publisher to publisher, Anderson handled the newsstand distribution of several hundred ABC member magazines. At its June 4 meeting, the Magazine Directors’ Advisory Committee (MDAC) formed a task force to review the Anderson situation and provide recommendations to the ABC board regarding the accounting for newsstand sales where there is incomplete information and reporting of issues affected by the closure. The ABC board will review the MDAC’s recommendations at its July 22 24 meeting in Chicago and alert consumer magazine members so they may make appropriate adjustments to their June 2009 FAS-FAX and Publisher’s Statement data. To accommodate this, ABC is extending the filing deadline and moving the release date for the June 2009 FAS-FAX report. New FAS-FAX and Publisher’s Statement Filing Schedule The revised schedule is in effect for all periodical members in the U.S. and Canada, including consumer magazines, farm and religious publications and business publications. Publications not affected by the Anderson closure are asked to submit June 2009 claims as soon as possible instead of waiting for the extended deadline. July 1 August 14 August 31 September 2 September 10 File an Exception Request with the ABC Board Publications uniquely impacted by the Anderson closure can submit a request directly to the ABC board of directors for review at their July meeting. All requests must be provided to ABC’s executive vice president, field auditing, not later than Thursday, July 2. Publishers do not need to submit an exception request to file by the revised deadline or to recast their data based on the board’s decision. For More Information If you have any questions about the new filing schedule, please contact a Publisher Relations manager. ABC will publicize the board’s ruling on the Anderson matter in the post-board meeting press release and VIP e-mails on Tuesday, July 28. Related Links: |
