ABC Expands Centralized Audit Service to Business Publications

To help ABC members complete their audits in a timely and flexible manner, ABC has expanded its Centralized Audit Service to business publications. Previously, audits for business publication members took place either on-site at the publisher’s office or at a fulfillment house. With the development of the Centralized Audit Service for business publications, now the audit can be conducted off-site at ABC’s offices.

Currently available for ABC newspaper members, the Centralized Audit Service allows publishers to submit their audit records directly to ABC, either by mail or electronically. The auditor sends the publisher a comprehensive list of all of the records required to conduct the audit. Once the publisher’s records are returned to ABC, the auditor reviews the files to ensure they are complete and the entire list is fulfilled. The audit does not begin until ABC has received all of the records on the request list. The auditor then works to verify the publisher’s circulation claims from ABC’s office.

For the most part the entire audit is conducted at ABC’s office. An ABC auditor will need to visit the publisher’s office to review a sample of cash-related transactions. In these instances, the auditor is only in the publisher’s office for a day.

“The Centralized Audit Service gives publishers several benefits,” said ABC’s Jay Chandrasekharan, manager, centralized electronic audit applications. “First, the publisher has greater flexibility in preparing their audit documentation. Unlike the traditional audit process where an auditor arrives on a specific date, the centralized audit process gives the publisher a range of dates to submit their records to ABC.

“Another advantage is that an auditor isn’t in the publisher’s office for a week,” continued Chandrasekharan. “Since the audit is conducted at ABC’s office, the publisher’s staff does not experience interruptions in their day-to-day work environment.

“In some instances there is also the potential for the publisher to experience a cost savings. But the most important advantage for publishers is the timely release of circulation data to their current and potential buyers,” concluded Chandrasekharan.

The Centralized Audit Service is ideal for business publications that do not use one of the major fulfillment houses (Kable, CDS, Palm Coast Data and Time Customer Service), including those that are self-fulfilled or use a smaller fulfillment house.
