New Canadian Newspaper Advisory Committee Formed, First Meetings Held
In November, the ABC board ratified the creation of a new Canadian Newspaper Advisory Committee (CNAC) to review and discuss changes to ABC rules and provide comments and perspective to ABC’s Canadian Committee. The committee is comprised of representatives from major Canadian newspaper publishers and chaired by David Swail, vice president of operations, central Canada, Sun Media Corporation and interim publisher, Toronto Sun. The group held its first meeting in November to review ABC board actions from that month. The committee reviewed a new 15 percent error tolerance rule for home-delivered sponsored third-party copies, proposed modifications to rules covering barter payment standards and potential changes to newspaper reporting formats. At the CNAC’s next meeting held Jan. 9, ABC’s Executive Vice President of Auditing Mike Moran gave presentations on the new Insert Verification Service and magazine Publisher’s Statement report format. Both presentations were followed by discussions on the relevance of the topics to the Canadian newspaper market. Other items of discussion included the conversion of weekend subscribers, barter rules, association and trade show sponsorships, advertising sold with sponsorships and omitted days. “The formation of the Canadian Newspaper Advisory Committee is an exciting venture that demonstrates ABC’s commitment to the Canadian market,” said Dennis Skulsky, president and publisher, Pacific Newspaper Group. “On behalf of the ABC board of directors, I welcome the new committee and look forward to their input on issues affecting the Canadian marketplace.” The advisory committee will meet again on Monday, Feb. 6, to review advertiser input to proposed ABC rule modifications.
