e-Data Analysis Tools: How to Analyze Verified Circulation

In June 2006, consumer magazines began reporting “verified” circulation for the first time. Since then, ABC has received many inquiries from members about how to use the e-Data tools to analyze verified circulation. ABC’s Susan Bartucci, assistant manager, marketing and sales, has agreed to walk NewsBulletin readers through the process of analyzing verified circulation using the ePeriodicals tool.

Password and Subscription Information

If you don’t remember your password information or you would like to subscribe to the e-Data tools, contact ABC’s

Step 1

First, enter your login information in the Statement Access and e-Data area on ABC’s Web site at www.accessabc.com.

Step 2

Choose the ePeriodicals button from the list of menu options.

Step 3

Next, choose the U.S. Consumer Publications button.

Step 4

The next screen allows you to select your search criteria. You can search by Publication Name, SRDS Classification, Publisher, Publications that Report Circulation Analysis by County, and Total Circulation Size. For this exercise, scroll down to 3) Search By Publisher, select a publisher of your choice and then click on Publisher Search.

Step 5

Now you are presented with more criteria to customize your report. The first option is to select the titles of the publisher you searched. Hit the Select All button to search all the titles published by Publisher B.

Step 6

Next, Select the Time Frame. Since verified circulation was first reported in the most recent Publisher’s Statement period (June 2006), select Current.

Step 7

Since all verified copies are subscriptions, scroll down to the Subscription Analysis heading. Now choose Supplemental Analysis of Avg. Paid & Verified Circulation and then hit Continue.

Step 8

The next screen gives you a variety of field or heading choices to include in your final report. Here are the criteria we selected (Magazine Name and Statement Date are included by default):

  • Publisher
  • Total Paid Subscriptions
  • % Total Paid Subscriptions
  • Verified Subscriptions – Public Place
  • Verified Subscriptions – Individual Use
  • Total Verified Subscriptions
  • Total Paid & Verified Subscriptions
  • % Total of Circulation
Select Continue.

Step 9

Your final report appears on the next screen. From here, there are several additional options for your report:

  1. You can download the file onto your own computer in Excel format by hitting the Download button across the top of the screen. This makes the report easy to manipulate.
  2. You can e-mail the report to other people in your office by selecting the Email Report button.
  3. You can save the report by selecting Save Query. This option allows you to name and save your report for future use without downloading it onto your computer. You can also delete old reports from this screen.

Step 10

Select the Save Query button and name your report Verified Analysis Part 1. In February’s NewsBulletin we’ll use this report to continue our analysis of verified circulation.
