In this month’s e-Data Analysis Tools Tips and Tricks column, ABC’s Susan Bartucci, assistant manager, marketing and sales, explains how NewsBulletin readers can use the Map feature of the eNewspaper tool to search by ZIP code.

In next month’s column, Bartucci will share additional methods of searching by ZIP code.

Step 1

First, enter your login information in the Statement Access and e-Data area on ABC’s Web site at www.accessabc.com.

Step 2

Choose the eNewspapers button from the list of menu options.

Step 3

Next, choose the U.S. Daily & Weekly button.

Step 4

Scroll down until you see the large map of North America. Use the Zoom In, Zoom Out and Recenter tools to narrow the area of your search.

Step 5

After you have narrowed your search to the desired region, select the ZIP button in the menu bar.

Step 6

Now click the Select tool from the menu bar across the top of the map and begin selecting the ZIP codes you wish to search. When a ZIP code area is selected, it will change to a red crosshatch. To select a large area of ZIP codes, you can also use the Marquee tool.

Step 7

Now choose either Circulated in Area or Published in Area and then select Submit Map.

Step 8

The next screen displays the titles of the newspapers that meet the criteria you selected. Choose which titles you would like to continue searching on. You also need to select the time frame you wish to search – Current or History – and then click MAP Report.

Step 9

This screen allows you to choose how you would like to search. Since our goal is to search by ZIP code, we select the ZIP code option and then click MAP.

Step 10

Now choose the statement dates you would like your search to encompass and then click MAP.

Step 11

The next screen allows you to narrow your search further by selecting the day of week you want to search by. After you select the day of week, click MAP.

Step 12

The final selection screen displays the type of data you can include in the final report. We select Total Average Paid Circulation and then click MAP.

Step 13

The next screen is your final output. The map at the top displays the ZIP codes you selected. The colors of the map indicate the levels of circulation in your selected ZIP codes, i.e., the darker the color, the greater the circulation.

Further down the screen, the ZIP codes are itemized with the total average paid circulation listed for all publications in that ZIP code.

The final box displays the titles of the newspapers that have circulation in the ZIP codes you selected and also shows the total average paid circulation by newspaper.
