ABC Issues First Multimedia Publisher’s Statements for Business Magazines

RN and Nation’s Restaurant News Are First to Adopt New Reporting Option

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., (March 2, 2009)—The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) announced the release of the first two Multimedia Publisher’s Statements for business publications. RN, a publication serving professional nurses, and Nation’s Restaurant News, a publication serving commercial and on-site food service and lodging establishments, are the first ABC members to adopt and release multiplatform audience metrics in the new report format. The multimedia reports allow RN and Nation’s Restaurant News to present advertisers with a broader picture of their total audience footprint across all media channels.

Approved at ABC’s July 2008 board meeting, the Multimedia Publisher’s Statement allows business magazines to include a variety of auditable media in Paragraph 1 of ABC’s traditional print circulation reports. Publishers may include website activity, e-newsletter distribution, trade show activity and pass-along receivership data alongside total qualified circulation data. All of the data elements are presented as “Total Gross Contacts” on the report.

“The multimedia report displays the numerous ways RN reaches its target audience across multiple channels,” said Mark Rosen, Advanstar Communications’ consumer audience development director. “Using an ABC-verified report to demonstrate our claim of nearly one million contacts gives us more credibility with advertisers and shows the great value of multi-channel marketing opportunities at RN.”

Lynn Bushell, Lebhar-Friedman’s vice president of audience development agreed, “ABC’s Multimedia Publisher’s Statement gives us the chance to talk about Nation’s Restaurant News’ overall reach across multiple channels, not just the print circulation numbers. The independent, third-party validation ABC provides also helps differentiate us from our competitors.”

ABC’s president and managing director, Mike Lavery, commented, “ABC’s business publication members are leading the charge for multiplatform reporting. Their unique business model and ability to reach targeted audiences across multiple media channels is now showcased in the new multimedia reports. As more and more of our members look to report their entire media footprint—not just their print circulation—ABC is ready to provide reporting options and independent verification for all media platforms.”

The Multimedia Publisher’s Statement is designed to provide business publications with the utmost flexibility in multiplatform reporting. For example, RN reported page impressions and unique users for www.rnweb.com; net delivered e-mails for the RNeNews newsletter; and pass-along receivership for the print RN alongside traditional circulation metrics. Nation’s Restaurant News included page impressions and unique users for www.nrn.com, and pass-along receivership and circulation data for the print Nation’s Restaurant News.

A prototype of the Multimedia Publisher’s Statement for business publications is available on ABC’s website. The actual reports for RN and Nation’s Restaurant News are available to ABC members in the e-Data center.
