ABC Releases First Community Newspaper Audit Report for Scottsbluff Star-Herald

More Than 300 U.S. Newspapers Enrolled in Program

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 4, 2010)—The Audit Bureau of Circulations has completed and released the first community newspaper audit report for the Star-Herald in Scottsbluff, Neb.

The Star-Herald was one of the first newspapers to enroll in ABC’s Community Newspaper Audit program when it officially launched in January. More than 300 U.S. newspapers are now enrolled in the audit service that was specifically designed to meet the needs of newspapers with less than 25,000 daily average paid circulation.

"The new online Community Newspaper Audit that is offered by ABC is a valuable tool for expediting the auditing process,” explained Connie King, ABC clerk for the Star-Herald. “It allows a newspaper to upload the information and proceed with the audit in an easy and efficient manner. Questions and requests for information are handled with a minimum of disruption in the office. Thank you ABC, for providing this new tool for newspapers."

ABC’s CNA service is a streamlined program that features all-inclusive fees beginning at just $2,000 per year, off-site audits that occur every other year and require less publisher preparation and involvement, and simplified rules and reporting requirements. All CNA Publisher’s Statements and Audit Reports are published in ABC’s online database and available to ABC member advertisers and advertising agencies.

“At J.C. Penney’s, community newspapers are an integral component of our media plans because of the valuable audiences they deliver,” explained Merle Davidson, market media director, strategic marketing/media services, J.C. Penney Co. “ABC’s Community Newspaper Audit program is ideal because it minimizes the time and money smaller newspapers spend on an audit while still providing advertisers with the ZIP-code level data and other circulation information we need to make informed media buys.”

The completion of the first community newspaper audit comes just weeks after ABC announced its new affordable readership service for small to midsize newspapers. ABC has contracted with American Opinion Research to offer newspapers the opportunity to obtain audited readership studies at an affordable price and report the data via the acclaimed Audience-FAX program. The cost of the studies begin at just $11,500 with volume discounts that may drop costs to as low as $9,500.
