Gannett Company Inc. Enrolls 22 Newspapers in ABC’s Insert Verification Service; 50 ABC Members Now Enrolled in IVS

June 5, 2006

Gannett Company Inc. has enrolled its 22 largest newspapers in the Audit Bureau of Circulations’ (ABC) new Insert Verification Service (IVS). Gannett papers that will participate in the program include: Detroit Free Press (Mich.), Arizona Republic (Phoenix, Ariz.), Indianapolis Star (Ind.), Cincinatti Enquirer (Ohio), Courier-Journal (Louisville, Kentucky), Des Moines Register (Iowa), Tennessean (Nashville, Tenn.), in addition to 15 others.

Last week, ABC released six inaugural IVS reports for the Chicago Tribune, Dayton Daily News (Ohio), Journal-Gazette/News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Quad-City Times (Davenport, Iowa), St. Petersburg Times (Fla.) and the Washington Post. With Gannett’s enrollment, a total of 50 ABC-member newspapers have opted for IVS since it was launched on Jan. 1. View a complete list of IVS participants.

The creation of IVS was a joint venture between ABC-member newspaper publishers and advertisers. The voluntary program provides independent third-party verification and accountability for the pre-print advertising industry. IVS is a quantitative review and audit of a newspaper’s advertising insert distribution process on a given test date. Each report includes a “Total Insert Proficiency” calculation that reflects the newspaper’s insert distribution performance. This is represented as an overall success percentage indicating the volume of inserts reaching intended newspaper recipients. The balance of the IVS report offers additional details on the verification field test and discloses error rates and conditions observed by ABC.

“IVS demonstrates the essential role ABC plays in providing advertising accountability metrics for our members,” said ABC’s Michael Lavery, president and managing director. “The response to this program has thus far been very encouraging from both publishers and advertisers. IVS expands advertising buyer-seller opportunities while offering the compelling assurance that only ABC can provide.”

IVS reports are available without charge to current ABC eStatement subscribers at www.accessabc.com alongside ABC’s Audit Reports and Publisher’s Statements. A sample IVS report is also available online.
