26-Week Reporting Cycle Extended to Magazines

Effective with June 30, 2009 reporting period

The newspaper division of ABC maintains a rule that allows publishers who operate their billing on a 4-week cycle to report circulation averages in their ABC report for the 26-week period nearest the end of the calendar quarter. As a result, publications using this type of billing cycle may release publisher statements for dates on a 26-week end rather than 6 months end. The ABC board at the March 2009 meeting extended this rule to the magazine division. If a publication wants to report in such a way, those publications still must report all issues, sales, and average price for a six-month period. The impact on their reporting would be the alignment of the issues at the beginning and end of the reporting period. For example a weekly publication dated June 25 or July 3 could be reported in either the June or December ended statements based on their billing cycle period.
